About VERIFY

VERIFY is a £5m research project aiming to build an Early Warning System to detect climate tipping points

VERIFY and the other teams within the Advanced Research + Invention Agency's Forecasting Tipping Points programme will work collaboratively to design an Early Warning System.

Challenge: tipping points of the Greenland Ice Sheet and North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean Gyre have not occurred recently enough in Earth's past for humans to have measured them

How do you predict something you've never seen?

  • VERIFY will produce and collate records of climate tipping in Earth's geological past to better understand how tipping occurred during these times
  • VERIFY will combine cutting-edge climate simulations with palaeoclimate records to build Digital Twins, which will provide a better representation of Earth's past climate than either the simulations of palaeoclimate records individually
  • VERIFY will build an Early Warning System that will sound the alert if climate tipping points are crossed in the future
  • VERIFY will build tool to evaluate the performance of Early Warning Systems by testing them against climate tipping points that have occurred in Earth's history
  • VERIFY will work with policy makers and interested parties to ensure the Early Warning System is trusted, useful and impactful
