Bridging Observations and Models Workshop

Dates: 15th-16th October 2026

Venue: Cloth Hall Court, Leeds

Bridging observations and models: co-designing an OSSE framework for forecasting tipping points in the subpolar gyre

The VERIFY project is hosting a 2-day workshop on 15-16 October in Leeds, focused on a prototype observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) framework we are developing to evaluate observational platforms for monitoring potential tipping in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre. The framework is aimed to allow testing, ahead of deployment, how different combinations of sensors and sampling strategies constrain our ability to predict whether and when the gyre might tip. Over the two days, we'll work with participating teams to characterize their platforms' observational capabilities - what they measure, how often, where, and with what uncertainty - so these can be represented as realistic synthetic observations within the OSSE. In turn, we'll explore how the framework can help answer practical deployment questions: where and when to deploy, what to measure, for how long, and how data from different platforms might be combined most effectively. The workshop is intended to be a genuine two-way exchange: we gain the detail needed to build realistic virtual twins of different platforms, and participants gain hands-on experience of how OSSE-based tools can inform the design of their field campaigns.

The workshop will run from 10-17:30 on October 15th followed by a workshop dinner, and 08:30 -13:00 on October 16th. More details, included a full programme, will be added nearer the time.
